The mood of The Importance of Being Earnest is light. Throughout the play there is a feeling of amusement. At times, however, there is a darker tone, such as the scenes in Algernon�s flat. This play takes place during a time where the upper-class were expected to behave with the strictest of morals, or at least appear to. A standard rule of design, at the time, was: the more decorative and intricate, the better. Wainscoting, crown molding, and wood floors were present in most homes. Furniture was made from cherry, mahogany, and maple wood with fiddle-back chairs and carved shell motifs. Brocade and velvet fabrics were favored in deep greens and blues with lighter accent colors. Most homes had several fireplaces. All of these intricate designs became more common because they no longer were all handmade, but mass produced with new jig-saw technology. The Importance of Being Earnest takes place in the summer of 1895.
