Death and Transfiguration Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Alexander Lawrence Posey’s “Ode to Sequoyah,” Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “Frederick Douglass” and Walt Whitman’s “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d” are three very different poems – by three very different poets – that have one thing in common: each takes as its subject the death of a great man of significant accomplishments who is held in high esteem by the poet. That, however, is where the similarities end. In the poetic treatment of their subjects, the three writers vary widely in the use of metaphor, in the emotional tone of the narrator and in the level of adherence to conventionality of structure. “Sequoyah” is very straightforward and traditional in its style, employing iambic pentameter and a very simple rhyme scheme. The poem has a classical feel to it. It begins by invoking great heroes of the past, a common technique in ancient Greek and Roman poetry, and even includes a comparison to the Greek mythological figure of Cadmus. Posey then adopts the conventional approach of describing and praising Sequoyah’s accomplishment and suggesting that it will contin......
