There are also many different types of civic engagement, from individual volunteering to organizational involvement to election participation. You can use civic engagement to directly address and issue, work with people in your community to solve a problem or just take part in the institutions of representative democracy. The book Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Ehrenreich is about a women who writes a journal about a women with a Ph.D concealed to see what it is like in the work place with stress and the lack of benefits and care. Taking place form 1998-2000, Barbara finds cheap places to stay and works at different place that only pay her $6-$7 an hour. She works as a waitress in Florida, a maid in Maine, and a sales clerk in Minnesota, but she soon finds out that even the lowest of paying jobs require hard work and strenuous efforts giving only a wage that barley covers your living expenses.
