Introduction If you have previously programmed in a conventional language like C, Pascal, or COBOL, you'll be familiar with the process of creating a program. You'll be used to using a text editor to write your program, a compiler to compile it, a linker to link in any library routines you may have called and finally you'll be used to running it directly on your computer. You may also have used a debugger to debug your program. However, things are different in Smalltalk. Smalltalk is a single, integrated system. It includes everything you need to develop, debug and run programs, all in one package. The purpose of my paper is to explain what this means, and introduce the major parts of the system.
