The Great Depression
The Great Depression was a hard time for the United States. From 1892 to 1933 the country was broke. Some of the causes of the Great Depression were the stock market falling, the banks had given too many loans out with out credit, the prices of the crops dropping, the dust bowl, these are just some of the many things that caused the Great Depression.
The stock market falling was a huge deal. Many people had their money in it. So when it went under, people lost their money. The day was called black Tuesday. People were buying on margin. That means they were taking out loans to buy in on the stocks. Still other people were buying stocks to make a quick dollar. All of this led up to the crash of the stock market.(Danzer, Gerald Pg 672-678)
The banks were to blame, too. They had been giving out loans to all of the people buying on margin and the farmers. But when they couldn’t pay back the loans the banks had no money.
