Alexander II’s return to reformism According to the historian W.E, Alexander II was “isolated from the Russian people” in the beginning of 1880s. The result of all this was largely because of hin indecision between the two policies of reform and conservatism. His popularity was decreasing even at Court. This is because of his passion for a younger woman. This woman, who was the Princess Dolgoruky, bore several of Alexander’s illegimate children. They married hastly after his first wife’s death. The Loris-Melikov ministry “Despite the misgivings of the Tsar, within a year (January 1880 – Februrary 18181) Mlikhail Loris-Melikov had abolished the Third Section, replaced reactionary Dmitri Tolstoy at the Ministry of Education, and steered Alexander II to the verge of the fundemental reform of his reign” (page 60).
