Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Quote Interpretation Chardonney Vick Period 1 December 6, 2005 Emerson has a lot of quotes from his poems. Most of his poems are about transcendentalism so his quotes to me are about not living life by the rules and doing what you feel is right. My favorite quote is “Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood? – is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood…” Emerson’s quote is from a poem called “ Self-Reliance.” If you know about Emerson you would know that he is a transcendental person. He thought that you should take whatever came at you and live life as best as possible.
