Satire and Life Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Satire is a literary technique of writing or art which principally ridicules its subject (for example, individuals, organizations, or states) often as an intended means of provoking or preventing change. In Bright Lights, Big City satire is used on numerous occasions in poking fun at the main characters job, hobbies, and ways of life. The main character is an editor for the department of factual verification. All day long he looks for errors in the writings he has been editing. The editors’ job can be known to be a very boring job. Everyone around the main character can see he is not happy in what he does. In quote, “I’ve only known you a couple of hours,” Vicky says, “but it doesn’t seem to me like your kind of job” (McInerney, 97). The main character is the type of guy who has a need for constant change and/or a need of always being on the move. He is never happy just sitting around. This quote is satire due to the fact that it ridicules his hatred for the job and how everyone else can see it. The main character eventually loses his job.
