Graham and Ailey Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Modern dance is a style of dance brought about through rebellion. Dancers were no longer content to follow the strict, regulated form of ballet—dancing on the frontal axis only, toes always pointed, feet turned out—modern dancers wanted to be able to show their emotions, tell stories and use their entire bodies. Two dancers, Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey, built on these values to create modern dance choreography that dealt with issues and philosophies occurring during their time periods that were relatable to their audiences. Historical content has been very important to dance choreography throughout the history of dance, but only through modern dance, has there been true freedom to create stories of the feelings of the people going through the events of that time. Martha Graham began her dance career at the Denishawn School of Modern Dance in Los Angeles in 1916. As one of their first students, she made her debut in 1920, with a dance choreographed for her, but she left in 1923 because she believed their style to be too stilted—still too in tune with the formatted style of......
