And his print Ascending and Descending inspired a whole new way of looking at art. George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher lived ordinary lives in the Dutch province of Freisland. George and Sarah were already parents of two children, and about to receive a third. On June 17, 1898, Maurits Cornelis Escher took his first look at the world. His father George Arnold Escher, served as a chief engineer for a government bureau. Escher attended elementary and secondary school in Arnhem.
