Throughout history man has had an insatiable craving for art. It has been further and further developed. New techniques and styles have faded in and out. Revolutionary artists have lived and died. None doubt that M.C. Escher is a master in the deception of the eye. People consider Escher perhaps the most insightful illusionist during the surrealist period. And his print Ascending and Descending inspired a whole new way of looking at art. George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher lived ordinary lives in the Dutch province of Freisland. George and Sarah were already parents of two children, and about to receive a third. On June 17, 1898, Maurits Cornelis Escher took his first look at the world. His father George Arnold Escher, served as a chief engineer for a government bureau. Escher attended elementary and secondary school in Arnhem. In school, like many of the great minds, he did not do well. He did, however, do well in art class, well enough that his art teacher offered him private lessons and taught him how to make linocuts.
