George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher lived ordinary lives in the Dutch province of Freisland. George and Sarah were already parents of two children, and about to receive a third. On June 17, 1898, Maurits Cornelis Escher took his first look at the world. His father George Arnold Escher, served as a chief engineer for a government bureau.
