�Clothing and dress are an important part of how popular music functions. Show how certain types of music produce particular styles of dress, using a case study approach.� In this essay I will examine the relationship between music and fashion and discuss how genres of music are accompanied by particular images. I will do this by focusing on hip hop music and by trying to identify how fashion has collaborated with this genre in the past and at present. I will look at artists such as Run DMC and The Beastie Boys and compare them to hip hop artists of today. I will also discuss the connotations that follow this genre of music and how fashion supports these connotations. Most genres of music are associated with a specific image. This image is accompanied by certain values, attitudes and beliefs that an audience will also relate to the genre.
