Nuclear Disarmament As long as there is the possession of nuclear arms, the major leading countries discourage other nations from developing their own nuclear arms. Since the plan was presented in 1946, the United Nations Disarmament Commission handled all nuclear substances peacefully. “All nuclear material, for the past 50 years or so, would have been managed internationally, peaceful purposes; as with all nuclear activities--from the uranium mines to the ownership of nuclear material” (Hugh 40). With North Korea’s leader Kim Jong II, North Korea has taken a path to use nuclear arms, rather than nuclear power for its starving people. With billions of food and medicine aid given to North Korea’s people, the government still pursues the military action, instead of the economic action to help its people. “Repeated famines have killed hundreds and thousands, and the U.N. estimates that 57% of the nation’s 23.3 million people are malnourished even though it has a million-man army ready to cross a demilitarized zone just 25 miles from Seoul, South Korea” (Bremner 46)......
