Pancholi University of liverpool donypancholi@hotmail.com 09/02/06 Introduction Neisseria Gonorrhoea is responsible for the transmission of Gonorrhoea a sexually transmitted infection. N. gonorrhoea is a small Gram negative, kidney shaped, intracellular diplococcus bacterium which, in the past was susceptible to conventional antibiotics but of late is proving to be a resilient organism.It was first discovered in 1879 and has since continued to evolve and adapt developing resistance to a number of antibiotics. Apart from the genetic make-up of the bacterium there are other environmental factors that have facilitated the development of antibiotic resistance within the organism. According to the World Health Organisation when antimicrobial susceptibility to a drug falls below 95%, the microbe may be defined as resistant to that drug.
