Poetry has always been an oral art form, going back in history to the time of Homer reading "The Odyssey." Poets, storytellers, and other troubadours would travel from town to town, reading their work and getting their poetry heard. This oral tradition sprang from necessity because it was not possible to spread it otherwise. You couldn�t print hundreds of copies of poems so reading them aloud was the only method people could experience the works. But through the ages as inventions such as the printing press and in more modern times the internet arose, that necessity for the oral tradition began to give rise to poetry that could be accompanied by music. In the 1950s and 1960s the performance of oral poetry started to give rise the idea of poetry leaving the page and being performed to an audience. More recently in the 1990s that same tradition of performance was taken further by adding music to it. Music and poetry are normally not mentioned in the same sentence.
