Discuss the role of the �Witches� in MACBETH The play �Macbeth� was written in the early 1600�s by an epic play writer named William Shakespeare. He is known for other plays such as, A Midsummer Nights Dream and Othello. In Macbeth, Shakespeare has included three supernatural characters named the witches or the three sisters. Throughout the play they make contradictions to influence Macbeth�s already existing ambition. In Shakespeare�s time many people believed in the supernatural and witchcraft. People believed that witches could, fly, vanish into thin air, change their physical state, see into the future and control the weather. In Macbeth Shakespeare has used the witches to guarantee a wide audience by adding mystery and dramatic scenes. As the witches enter the stage they are introduced by a series of thunder and lightning, the dramatic effect of this is that it creates suspense among the audience; they know the witches are to appear, therefore they prepare themselves for a dramatic scene.
