William Shakespeare’s great tragedies are timeless revelations of human frailties. Each play presents a tragic hero who is the cause of his own destruction through his character flaw. Macbeth, one of the Bard’s great tragic heroes, is driven by an unrelenting ambition for power. In his quest to rule Scotland, Macbeth resorts to despicable acts of murder and betrayal. To dramatize Macbeth’s journey to self destruction, Shakespeare develops five themes common to all of his tragic masterpieces. The five recurring themes include: contrasting worlds, the rise of one person at the expense of another, deception and disguise, disorder yielding to order, and forgiveness, redemption, or conversion. One of the most important themes in Macbeth involves the witches’ statement in Act 1, Scene1 that “fair is foul and foul is fair.” (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 10) This phrase aptly describes the macabre status quo within the character Macbeth and without.
