Never Knowing I remember that hot, humid summer night like it was yesterday. Not knowing then, the sadness and confusion that would be brought on the next six years. I was in the third grade, young and full of life, and not a care in the world. Everything seemed to be okay at home. My older sister had sleep-overs and movie nights all the time with her friends that summer. Mom and I would sit down some nights and play a never-ending game of Monopoly, If I was lucky. I recall once that dad took me fishing at a pond behind our house. We used those long cane poles, instead of the fancy reel and rod ones. Life seemed to be good, at least in my perspective. That night I was asleep in my bed, and probably still neatly tucked in from when mom had left my room. I like to think I was in a deep dream that night. I was awakened by a rather loud beating and yelling on the other side of the front door.
