Asteroids are referred to as minor planets. They can range in size from about 1000 km down to the size of small rocks (Hamilton). Asteroids are mainly made up of rocks and metallic objects. They orbit the sun the same as planets do, but are too small to be considered planets. The following paper will discuss the history of asteroids and the different types of asteroids and sizes. Asteroids can be extremely large or as small and a pebble. Most asteroids are harmless and are not close to earth. The total mass of all the asteroids is less than that of the Moon. Williams�s article states that, asteroids orbit the sun and are mainly in the belt that exists between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter (2). This belt is a vast doughnut shaped ring located between the two planets. Some have orbits that cross Earth�s path and �some have even hit the Earth in times past� (Williams 1). One such incident is that has been preserved was the Barringer Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona (Williams).
