Cultural and Structural Explanations of Racial and Ethnic Inequalities in Educational and Labor Market Outcomes
Racial and ethnic inequalities in educational and labor market outcomes have been extensively studied. Cultural arguments concentrate on the attitudes, values, norms, individual qualities, and other cultural differences among groups to explain the unequal outcomes. Structural arguments, on the other hand, focus on the structural constraints and barriers that minority’s experience. Both explanations seek to explain why certain members of society tend to achieve higher levels of success in educational and labor market outcomes, while other groups attain such success on a much smaller scale. In contrasting both these explanations, my interpretation of their strengths and weaknesses will be explored with a policy prescription I think would help close the gap in outcomes.
