Their lives were saved due to the efforts of Amnesty International. Amnesty International is a human rights organization which started as one man�s idea, and has developed into a world-respected multi-national organization whose members and volunteers work tirelessly to expose crimes against humanity and advocate for the release of prisoners held unjustly. It all began forty years ago, while one man was sitting, reading his newspaper. Peter Benenson, who was a British lawyer, was horrified by the news that two Portuguese students had been arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison simply for drinking a toast �to freedom�. He decided to take action. His plan was to bombard the Portuguese government with letters of protest. Thus, on May 27, 1961, a year-long campaign, called �Appeal for Amnesty�, began. It would be the first outcry from a group that would grow into the world-recognized organizatio......
