Marriage and Irony in The Story of an Hour “The story of an hour”, by Kate Chopin, is a short story about a woman who treats the news of her husband’s death as a channel for freedom but dies from shock after her husband comes home alive. More than the story of Louise—the main character, this is a description of the suppressed feelings of a home bound nineteenth century woman. It compares the views of males and females of that era regarding about marriage. While the marriage today is mostly based upon reciprocal love between two people, but during the time period of Chopin, this was not often the case. The society was devoid of the rapid industrialization at that time and the marriage was much about financial and social status. The hidden despise to this type of marriage in the mind of females and the clear appreciation by males help us in understanding the ironic ending of the story. This story suggests the implied view of marriage by Kate Chopin. The role of women of that era in marriage was very much subdued and limited to the boundaries of the house and the daily rout......
