In Kate Chopin’s “Desiree’s Baby“, Desiree was abandoned as a young child, and found by Madame Valmonde; who takes her in with loving arms. Later in life, Desiree gets married to Armand Aubigny. In time they have a baby boy. As the baby ages it is obvious he has a dark complexion; as a result Armand agrees that Desiree should leave. Thus Desiree take’s her baby “ with no word of explanation” (933); she and her baby are never to be seen again. Shortly after Armand finds a letter from his mother to his father saying that she “belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery” (934). Identity plays an important role in “Desiree’s Baby”. Desiree was at a “toddling age”(930), when Madame Valmonde “found her lying asleep in the shadow of the big stone pillar”(930). Therefore Desiree was striped of her true identity; the adoption by Valmonde gives her a new identity, and accordingly she “grew to be beautiful and gentle, affectionate and sincere- the idol of Valmonde”(930).
