Field Marshall Haig was a celebrated Cavalry Commander in The Boer War 15 years earlier. This was a great triumph for him and won him the place of Field Marshall in World War 1 during the stalemate on the Western Front in 1915. These fights on the Plains of Africa were nothing like what would happen in this war. No one knew how to cope with trench warfare which changed people�s attitudes to the War. Haig�s attitude to the war was that all you needed was a gun, cavalry, spirit and morale. These were not what won the war, but he thought that these ideas were what could win us the war. We are not sure whether other commanders would have taken the same attitude towards the warfare we can really only presume they would take the same attitude because they didn�t have the information we have today on warfare. The Battle of the Somme was the worst day in military history and that is one of the many reasons that Haig has his nickname as the butcher of the Somme.
