Multi-cultural Education Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Multicultural education is a philosophy for formal schooling that has been promoted among educators for nearly two decades. The old assimilation policy, the ‘Melting-Pot’, still an aim of American schools, came under attack as the political and social consciousness of the relatively powerless minorities was raised during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s; an alternative, multicultural education was demanded, one which reflected and responded to the cultural diversity of the United States. Multicultural programmes are still in the early stages of development, but their curricula are expected to incorporate ideas and methods that are sensitive to the needs and views of all the cultural and ethnic groups in the USA, not simply those of the American mainstream. For this reason, anthropology has contributed not only most of the basic concepts in multicultural education but much of the content as well. This chapter addresses the question of how anthropology through a multicultural curriculum can benefit American Indian schools.
