Loneliness within relationships in Of Mice and Men
John Steinbeck uses many relationships in his book, Of Mice and Men, to help show that loneliness had a large impact on many people on the farm. For example, both Curley and his wife as well as George and Lennie show that the loneliness between them creates tension on the farm; which therein cause them to do things in which they may not have done if not affected by loneliness. In the novel, Steinbeck shows that loneliness was a serious problem for migrant farm workers and their relationships with family and acquaintances, by using characterization and imagery.
Loneliness is a condition in which the person suffering from the problem does not fully feel like he/she feels accepted. They feel alone. Loneliness as defined by Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary is,” 1a. Being without company b. cut from others; SOLITARY (498).” There is a sense of desolation in the person, as seen through Crooks and Curley’s wife as well as many others in the book.
