Elements of Gothic Literature Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Gothic literature has been captured by a number of different eighteenth century writers. It can be presented in diverse forms to intrigue various audiences. Death and darkness are be key elements found within a Gothic piece of literature. In Thomas Gray’s, “Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard”, these elements are evident throughout the poem. Gray’s use of words and phrases sets a mood of darkness and solitude, which endorses the context of the poem and the environment that the poem is taken place in. The speaker shows to have a type of connection with the dead strangers as he passes through the graveyard. Gray’s shadowy description coincides with the speaker’s realization of the significance of the strangers buried and his belief that death is inevitable. This poem can be read as gothic literature due to its main theme of death. This gives the “Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard” more depth, as it provides readers further insight and the ability to relate to the speaker and his views on the deceased.
