Hrothgar vs. Grendel The imagery that the poet used for Hrothgar always described him to be a good person, the light to Grendel�s evil. The poet always makes sure you can clearly depict who is good and who is evil. �� He never dared to touch king Hrothgar�s glorious throne, protected by God� (82-83). This quote is saying that Hrothgar is worthy and good enough to be protected by God. �Hrothgar, gray-haired and brave� this shows that even though Hrothgar is old he will still stand up for himself and his men because he is brave (340). �He wept, fearing the beginning might be the end� (48-49). Even a man such as Hrothgar cries and shows his feelings. Even as King he wasn�t sure he or his men could be saved from Grendel. On the other hand, the imagery for Grendel is pure evil and hatred. Hrothgar is the light, and Grendel is the dark. The poet clearly depicts that Grendel is the source of all the evil going on in Herot. �Keeping the bloody feud alive, seeking no peace, offering no settlement, no price / paying the living for one crime with another� (68-72).
