Pearl Harbor: Conspiracy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

On the fateful morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombarded the naval base Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This devastating attack was called a surprise attack by FDR as he quoted “Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of American was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” (Wels 167) An abundant amount of information leads to the conclusion that the attack on Pearl Harbor was not a surprise. Prior intelligence, government diplomacy and naval strategies indicate that the attack was known to the American government; therefore, the attack was not a surprise. Diplomacy between Japan and the U.S. occurred many times during the year 1941. FDR had written a letter to Japan in early 1941 stating ‘there is a long period of unbroken peace and friendship.’ FDR spoke of hope and an end to the conflict in Japan (Prange 4). Germany and the axis would never declare war on the U.S. if we looked unbeatable. (Web 1 16).
