The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

How does symbolism affect a piece of literature? The novel The Great Gatsby uses symbolism to connect objects and everyday happenings with life. The green light in the novel represents Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. The eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg looking down from the billboard symbolize the eyes of God. Gatsby knocking over the clock at Nick’s house symbolizes his attempt to stop time. The weather fits with the emotional atmosphere of what is happening. The rose symbolizes beauty and how Gatsby sees Daisy. Gatsby swimming in the pool represents him clinging to the thought of the beginning of the summer, and making Daisy love him like she used to. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby stands on the lawn reaching out at a green light. This green light represents Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. He saw it as a symbol of his destiny with Daisy. He reaches out to it in the darkness as a guiding light toward his goal, to get Daisy back. It generally symbolizes the American dream. In the end of the book, the green light is gone, and so is Daisy and Gatsby’s dream......
