Some of the world’s greatest fictional stories, come from real life experiences of gifted authors. Isabel Allende was born in 1942 into a diplomatic family in Peru. Allende is a Chilean writer was spent much of her young life traveling throughout Latin America living with her family. Her first attempt at writing a novel came in 1982 with her now extremely popular publication The House of Spirits. Published first in Spanish her book received so much acclaim from both local and international media, it was finally published in English three years later in 1985. Allende draws on many of her real life issues with her family and various political experiences as a child and young adult to form this wonderful read. The House of Spirits is a remarkable novel drawing on many of the social problems that have plagued many developing countries. Isabel Allende explores the struggle between classes, the lack of mobility through the classes, as well as the development of cities and the preservation of countryside.
