The Meiji Restoration of 1868 terminated the 265-year-old feudalistic Tokugawa Shogunate, significantly revolutionising the state of Japanese society from thousands of years of traditional ideas and beliefs. The state of society modified significantly through economic, social, cultural and intellectual aspects yet more significantly through political facets. The first reform was the promulgation of the Five Charter Oath in 1868, a general statement of the aim of the Meiji leaders: to boost morale and win financial support for the new government, consisting of establishment of deliberative assemblies, involvement of all classes in carrying out state affairs, freedom of social and occupational mobility, replacement of �evil customs� with �just laws of nature�, and international search for knowledge to strengthen the foundation of imperial rule (wikipedia source, 2006).
