The Cause of Human Suffering Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Human suffering presents itself through several specific examples in the short story The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien and the book A Rumor of War by Phil Caputo. Both stories take place during the Vietnam War and were also written by veterans of the war. In The Things They Carried Lt. Jimmy Cross recalls the death of Ted Lavender. His story depicts the human suffering that comes from Lavender’s death. In A Rumor of War, Phil Caputo talks about his personal experience during the Vietnam War and where and human suffering appeared. These stories are similar in that both O’Brien and Caputo write how human suffering comes from death if a soldier or a civilian is killed. They are different however in other ways that human suffering arises; O’Brien tells us that the soldiers’ personal possessions which distract them from their duty cause suffering while Caputo writes that training and performing one’s duty causes a soldier suffering.
