French-Canadian and English-Canadian Relations In surveying some of the events in the twentieth century, a historian might be able to demonstrate that the province of Quebec would be better off as a sovereign nation than it was as a badly-treated member of the Canadian Confederation. For example, there were three incidents - the Boer War (1902) and the conscription crisis (1917) followed by the FLQ uprising in a province struggling to establish its own way within a country holding opposing views. Finally, the two referendums held to find out the province of Quebec’s view about sovereignty cast a different light on the scene. In each of these four situations, the Quebecois were able to demonstrate the measure of their desire for Sovereignty by challenging the attitudes of English Canada. An important focus on the divergent relations between French-Canadians and English-Canadians can be found in the history of the Boer war.
