The controversy over guns and their standing in society becomes no more fervent than when it centers on children. During the past five years, the United States has witnessed many high profile shooting sprees in which the shooters have been teenage boys. The most recent happened in Santee, California, where a 15-year old high school student murdered two fellow students and wounded 13 others on school grounds. The most shocking occurred in 1998 in Littleton, Colorado, where two Columbine High School students killed 12 fellow students, one teacher, and then themselves. Other shooting sprees occurred in Springfield, Oregon; Pearl, Mississippi; West Paducah, Kentucky; Jonesboro, Arkansas; Edinboro, Pennsylvania; Raleigh, Virginia; and Conyers, Georgia. Gun violence represents a major threat to the health and safety of all Americans. Every day in the United States, 93 people die from gunshot wounds, and an additional 240 sustain gunshot injuries.
