Hemophilia If you ride a bike or play a sport, then you know about bruises and banged-up knees and elbows and it is not something that stops you from playing again. But for boys with a rare bleeding disorder, minor cuts and bruises can stop them from playing again. Hemophilia is a hereditary, blood disorders that mostly affect boys and it can affect people of any race or nationality. First, hemophilia is a blood disorder. Normally when someone injures themselves the blood clots in a few minutes and wound healing happens right away. But a hemophiliac is unable to heal right away. Hemophilia occurs when a person has a mutation in the clotting factor genes, �It is marked by spontaneous, uncontrollable internal and external bleeding that is caused by the lack of necessary proteins [factors] needed for blood clotting.� The missing factors are known as factor VIII or factor IX. When a person is lacking one of these factors then their blood does not clot well and may suffer from a hemorrhage, �About 80% of cases are hemophilia A, which is a factor VIII deficiency.
