General Theory of Crime Brian Campbell CJ102-C06 The general theory of crime is also known as the self control theory and the event-propensity theory. Michael Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi were the theorists who proposed the general theory of crime claiming that it was comported well with the observed stability of crime propensity and versatility. ( Winfree & Abadinskee Pg. 211, 2003) Gottfredson and Hirschi said that self-interest motivates human behavior and further reflects a universal desire to secure pleasure and avoid pain. They also explained that unrestrained individuals or those with little commitment to conventionality and equally low concern for the long term consequences of their behavior are thus attracted to crime. The social control theory focused on a person�s upbringing or childhood as being one of the keys to criminality.
