He takes an in-depth approach at exploring the experience of African transported from Africa to America during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. In both sections of his book the emphasis is on the African initiative in a manner somewhat reminiscent of the �nationalist� African historiography of the 1950�s and 1960�s. He seeks to portray Africans as creative participants in their history instead of unfortunate and passive victims.
