One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest - The Combine and the Factory Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The outside world is a combine and the world inside the walls of the mental institution is a factory for fixing mistakes, or so thinks Chief Bromden, the narrator of Ken Kesey’s novel: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Although the ward is supposed to “fix” the people who do not conform to society, all it does is separate them more. Nurse Rached contributes in doing so with her discussions that probe each patient, and in doing so alienating them more. This whole story is based on the confliction between the patients and society. As readers, we follow the lives of Billy Bibbit and Randall McMurphy. Billy is a young patient who is voluntarily staying in the mental institution because he is frightened of the outside world. Billy is also completely controlled by his mother, who also happens to be friends with Nurse Rached. On the contrary, McMurphy is a brand new patient in the ward who is faking his insanity in order to dodge a work farm which he should have gone to directly from prison. He is comical, confident and has an in-your-face attitude which is uncommon in the ward. As ......
