A Brief History of Ska Music Ska is a genre of music currently led by the likes of bands Reel Big Fish and Catch 22. Some may define ska music simply as �punk with trumpets� when it has its roots deeply embedded in many other genres that have, themselves evolved. The origins of ska came to be through three waves. The first wave was in the 1960s, the second in the late 1970s to early �80s, and the third in the �80s to early �90s. In the 1960s, the first wave, the amount of Jamaicans that purchased radios increased. For the first time they had the pleasure of listening to American R&B. This was the inspiration for reggae, which put emphasis on the upbeats of the rhythm, for guitar and piano. They described the sound as a �scat, scat� sound, hence the name ska. The Skatalites came about in this wave and did covers of some British music and did some movie themes as well. In the 1964 Worlds Fair, Byron Lee and the Dragons were chosen over The Skatalites.
