The Tale's Monk v.s. The Norm Flapper Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Tale’s Monk vs. The Norm Flapper
What strikes me most about the monk in the Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, is that he is what many would call a new generation of monk. “As old and strict he tended to ignore: he let go by the things of yesterday and took the modern world’s more spacious way.” Obviously it was a monk’s duty to care for all of God’s poor creatures, including the old and ill. This monk had no interest in such matters. The short paragraph in the introduction says something to the fact that many believe that holy men aren’t hunters, that they would be as a “fish out of the water.” However, this particular monk enjoys hunting, contrary to the popular belief. The monk, as I understand, sees no point in staying in the monastery poring over books and “studying till his head went round.” He doesn’t understand why he should put “the world upon a shelf” and labor in things that hold no interest for him. Wonder why he became a monk?
It also is very prevalent that the monk is vain. The fact that he has to have the finest of everything is very convincing evidence......
