How Rationing Affected Americans During World War II Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”(Brokaw 222) was the motto in the United States during World War II. Almost all products were in short. So that meant that civilians had to make do with what they could get. Farmers had to feed the millions of troops, so Americans left at home had to cut down their diet drastically(Kallen 41). There were great shortages in leather, wool, and almost every other type of material there was in the world(Fashion History - Utility Clothing 1940’s). Rubber, metals, gasoline, even nylon and silk were in demand for the army. Because of this, the population gave up all of these materials in order to contribute in the war(Kallen 41, World War II, and Your Car is a War Car Now). These hard times united Americans and gave people a sense of pride in themselves for helping the war effort. The OPA came up with the “golden rules” of food rationing, and their first rule was “Share your food with our fighting men.”(Kallen 43). Certain foods were limited, so the OPA (The Office of Price Administration) came up with a point system to make sure ......
