How Josie sees herself in relation to her identity, ties in very closely with her confusion between her two cultures, Australian and Italian. The Italian adults in Josie�s life discriminate against and insult Josie and her family behind their backs, because Josie�s mother, Christina, gave birth to Josie out of wedlock, and when Josie was a child they would say snidely in Italian �they don�t even know who he is.� (p. 35). Josie also wishes that she could be a part of the �popular� group at St. Martha�s, to belong to another world, �the world of sleek haircuts and upper-class privileges ... Please God let me be accepted by someone other than the underdog.� (p. 32).
