The 1919 Black Sox Scandal Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

This years World Series started off like any other, two highly competitive teams playing their hardest to see who would be named the best team in baseball. But underneath the exterior, an elaborate scheme for quick money was being put into play. The eight Chicago White Sox players involved with the scandal were “Showless” Joe Jackson, pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude “Lefty” Willians; infielders Buck Weaver, Arnold “Chick” Gandil, Fred McMullin, and Charles “Swede” Risberg; and outfielder Oscar “Happy” Felsch. Also involved in this plan were six high end gamblers, Abe Attell, Arnold Rothstein, Billy Maharg, Bill Burns, Nat Evens, and Joe “Sport” Sullivan, who paid each player $100,000 to throw the games. It was split up so each player would receive $15,000 before the first game, $20,000 before the second, and lastly $25,000 on the fourth morning and the rest of the money when the series ended. The problem however, with this much money involved someone outside the original 12 were bound to find out, who told others, and eventually everyone knew the truth behind the fixed series. ......
