Death in Emily Dickinson's Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Emily Dickinson's poem "I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died" focuses on the thoughts of a women lying in her deathbed. Many poets are fascinated with the idea of death and Dickinson is no exception. This poem can be set apart from her other dark themed poems because of its strange comparison to a fly and its positive images on a typically tragic event. Though the idea of death can be thought of as dark and depressing, Dickinson manages to portray her poem with a certain amount of optimism and beauty. She is able to not only focus on death, but also on life. Imagery is especially effective throughout this poem in creating a realistic situation, yet focusing not on the mourning of death but the little things in life that matter. Dickinson is able to speak about this inevitable event with hope and calmness as oppose to the traditional feelings of sadness and chaos. Throughout this poem Dickinson does not speak of death as a bad thing, rather a turning point into a new life.
