New Year’s Eve New Year’s Eve in Lithuania is celebrated on December 31st. It’s a time for people to end the year and to start the new. To begin with, preparations for New Year’s Eve begin weeks in advent. Every last year the television tower in Vilnius is decked out as a Christmas tree; in the city center a huge Christmas tree is decorated too. Also, streamers, balloons, flash lightings are hung everywhere and signs with the number of the new year are placed on buildings. Food: similar to those of Christmas Eve were prepared, except that the dishes could contain meat and straw wasn’t placed under the tablecloth. All family members met to celebrate on New Year’s eve, drank and ate. People stayed up on this festival at least until midnight to greet the New Year. It was believed that if an individual sleeps through such an important moments, his next year will go badly – he’ll be groggy and lazy.
