Maria feels terrified and nervous because she thinks Leon�s father is not easy to approach or simply when Leon�s father sees her, she may not be liked. The word ogre is a symbolism. It symbolizes what Maria�s thoughts to Leon�s father. Another example of a literary device used in the short story is the phrase �overhead the sky burned with many slow fires.� It describes the night with the stars glowing so bright. Sky burned refers to the sky, which is dark or black. When a thing gets burned, its color turns into black. Slow fires describe the shining stars.
