P.T. Barnum Presentation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

P.T. Barnum was best known as a 19th century American huckster. His full name at birth was Phineas Taylor Barnum. He was born on July 5, 1810, in Bethel, Connecticut and was the oldest of five children, he showed his first interest in salesmanship when he was 12 year old by selling lottery tickets. He is most recognized for saying “there's a sucker born every minute,” but there is no actual proof that he ever said that. He did, however, say that "every crowd has a silver lining," and acknowledged that "the public is wiser than many imagine." When he was 25 years old, Barnum paid $1,000 to obtain the services of Joice Heth, a woman who claimed to be 161 years old and the nurse of George Washington. Barnum showed her in New York and New England, raking in about $1,500 a week. He toured with this woman and a small company until 1839 when she died and her age was proved to be about 70 years old. In 1841, Barnum purchased the American Museum on Broadway in New York City. There he displayed 500,000 natural and artificial curiosities from every corner of the globe, and kept traffic movin......
