Last Summer In “The Loons,” Dr. MacLeod’s death becomes the leading factor in the way that each of the girls grows up. During their shared summer at Diamond Lake, Vanessa and Piquette did not forge a friendship; however, they did form a lasting bond through Dr. MacLeod’s attempts to bridge the gap between them. Dr. MacLeod’s untimely death proves to be the catalyst that allows each girl’s individual destiny to play out. When Vanessa’s father recommends that the family take Piquette along for their summer trip he has multiple motives. He suggests that “a couple of months rest would give that bone a much better chance” and that “it would be company for Vanessa” (986). The fact that Dr. MacLeod chooses to take Piquette over taking Grandmother MacLeod demonstrates his intent to break down some barriers the two girls face and give them the chance to learn about their different cultures without prejudice.
