Marijuana has had a bad reputation over the years that it does not deserve. Marijuana is a drug that has been used by 31.1 percent of Americans. Marijuana should be legalized because of its lack of health effects, its medicinal use, current severe punishment, and its financial advantages. Marijuana is safer than tobacco but is illegal. No one has ever died directly from the use of marijuana. Tobacco, the leader in annual deaths, kills 400,000 people a year. This is mostly due to lung problems. A common misconception is that marijuana is much more dangerous than tobacco when smoked. Smoked marijuana has the same amount of carcinogens, cancer-causing substances, as tobacco. The difference is tobacco is highly addictive. Tobacco has a ninety percent addiction rate and is the most addictive of legal drugs. It has been thought that a person could develop a tolerance to marijuana, which is the start of addiction; however, this does not mean they smoke more.
