Nat Turner's Rebellion Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the 1970's and the years leading up to the Civil War, the south’s agriculture and dependence on slavery grew tremendously. Also in the “antebellum era,” the south began to divide in several ways, the societies class and region, slaves verse their slave holders, and anti slavery verse’s pro-slavery. This division of the nation persisted mainly because of slavery and ultimately a war was fought because of it. Most African Americans and some radical white wanted to end racial prejudice appropriately ending slavery. Nat Turner’s revolt in August 1831 was an attempt by slaves to be free. The reasons behind the bloody uprising were their religious freedom, the agonizing years of slavery before the revolt, and their will to be free. After the revolt, whites viewed blacks in a different manner; slave holders feared religious gatherings, they persecuted the innocent blacks, and most importantly whites were more hostile toward African Americans.
